Message from the chairman of the Governing Body

Hoe beskryf ‘n mens die woord UNIEK? Die Nederlandse verklarende woordeboek beskryf dit soos volg:  “eenmalig, formidabel, buitengewoon, magtig, kolossaal, eindloos.
Jan Kriel Skool besit al hierdie eienskappe.
Eenmalig: Die klein begin van die skool in ‘n perdestal amper 75 jaar gelede.
Formidabel: Die wenspan van personeel wat betrokke is by hiedie skool.
Buitengewoon: Die onderwys behoeftes waaraan voorsien word.
Magtig: Dit wat vir ons kinders oorgedra word.
Kolossaal: Die belangrikheid van Jan Kriel Skool binne die onderwys gemeenskap.
Eindloos: Die strewe van almal wat by Jan Kriel Skool betrokke is.

Jan Kriel Skool is uniek met unieke kinders en unieke personeel.  Jan Kriel is die plek waar elke kind ‘n gelyke kans het om ten spyte van sy andersheid, te kan bou en vorm aan sy/haar toekoms.

Dit is vir my as ouer ‘n absolute eer om deel te wees van die Jan Kriel familie. Elke persoon wat betrokke is by die skool het so ‘n belangrike bydrae om te lewer tot hierdie sukses verhaal. Dankie aan julle almal.

Alle eer aan Ons Hemelse Vader vir die talente aan ons gegee om hierdie bydrae te maak aan so ‘n unieke skool.

It is an honour to be associated with Jan Kriel School, a school that does so much for our children.
We had many functions last year and only a small group of parents assisting in making it a success.  This year we will once again need parents to assist us.
The funds raised during these functions will be used to

  • improve the quality of education;
  • expand facilities; and
  • provide opportunities for learners.

Together with the school’s 75th birthday celebrations, it is my wish that we will take hands to ensure that this occasion is successful.

Functions / Fund-raisings for the year:

The PTA of Jan Kriel School is renowned for not using the traditional methods like competitions for fund-raising, but rather have functions for this purpose.  The aim is to provide a product or service in order to raise funds.  Parents and the community became used to these regular functions and indicate it on their calendars in advance.

The basic principle is to have one fund-raising event per school semester instead of having a number of small events.

These funds are applied as follow:

  • Matric Farewell
  • Funding sport tours
  • Funding equipment for needy learners
  • Purchasing of computers
  • Contributions towards the upgrading of the school building and hostels

Mnr MJ Burger

Mr MJ Burger  grew up in Knysna.  His father was very involved helping helping the woodcutters and he was always nearby.

After completing his studies at Stellenbosch, he taught in Bredasdorp for 8 years, then Graaf-Reinet, Eben Dönges in Kraaifontein and then he spent the past 19 years at Jan Kriel.  During this time he was also seconded for two years to establish the Academic for Mathematics and Science in Tokai.
 

   
To him every day is special – to see how children, despite big challenges, persevere and that miracles still happen.
   
His style of management is such that he focuses on the school and learners, while the greater infrastructure is delegated to compotent management teams and colleagues.
 
He believes in the security and pride of tradition.  Mutual respect amidst diversity is important to him.
